Oklahoma State guard Marcus smart lost it on Saturday night at Texas Tech. In a significant play of OSU and a Texas Tech ballgame. Marcus Smart pushed a fan from the stance after crashing to the floor beneath one basket. Smart got up and went to the front rows to shove an older man in the chest with two hands late in the game.
Smart was not ejected from the game but was assessed with a technical foul. Smart sat on the bench for the final seconds of the game. Smart looked more frustrated after the game and had to be walked off the floor by an Oklahoma State coach.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if OSU’s best player misses a couple more games. Whatever happens, Smart’s surprising decision to come back for his sophomore year is becoming more regrettable by the game. He would’ve been a lottery pick in 2013. But seeing his stock go down as Cowboys season is a disaster.
A comparison that comes to mind, is the famous Malice in the Palace, the 2004 Detroit brawl in which Ron Artest went into the stands to fight with fans. Artest was suspended a record 73 games for that, and other players were suspended 25 or more games.
As the Cowboys leader has lost his composure, the team has lost as well. OSU, which began the season as the Top 10, has now lost 4 of 6 in the Big 12, and 16-7 overall.
But the damage done is not just to OSU season. It is Smart’s career and reputation as well. It is a sad deconstruction of a great player who was highly regarded as all basketball people. Marcus Smart will pay a severe penalty for his actions soon. And he will likely pay for it again in June when his NBA hopes may get crushed.
The Big 12 Conference reportedly is going to review the incident Sunday, when a ruling is likely on any punishment for Smart.
